Hoa is best known for perms and hair colour, and she has become one of Vancouver’s most sought-after stylists for clients who want either straight or curly perm work done well. Much of her work is transformation-focused. Clients often arrive with an inspiration photograph and a specific result in mind. Hoa assesses the client’s current hair, condition, texture and maintenance preferences, then works toward the requested look with the cutting, colour, perming, straightening and finishing techniques the transformation requires.
When a client wants direction rather than a reference image, Hoa can create an original look around face shape, head shape, hair characteristics, personality and lifestyle. Her approach combines consultation with the technical freedom to make the finished style work for the person wearing it.
Hoa began developing that precision under competition pressure early in her career. After graduating from hairdressing at Vancouver Island University in 1997, she competed in regional hair competitions and earned awards in long-hair up-do, consumer fashion and progressive hairstyle categories before building her salon career.

Hairdressing and competition
Hoa graduated from the hairdressing program at Vancouver Island University and developed early experience competing in judged hair events, where precision and finished presentation mattered under pressure.
Downtown salon ownership
Hoa opened her first Downtown Vancouver salon at 525 Helmcken Street and began building the long-term client practice that became Straight & Curl.
The Vancouver Block
After approximately five years at the original location, she moved to the historic Vancouver Block at 736 Granville Street. Straight & Curl remains there today on the sixth floor, between Robson and Georgia.
